T.H.R.I.V.E. support group for adult adoptees

A place to talk about adoption with people who understand.

T.H.R.I.V.E. is a small support group for adult adoptees, led by an adoptee. One group meets in person in Niwot, and one meets online for adoptees anywhere in the U.S.

How the group works

The separation of a child from their birth mother is a loss that still goes largely unacknowledged. Many adoptees carry the effects not only of this primal wound but also of its fallout into adulthood. Most are met with no understanding, no place to talk about this, and no answers to understand it all themselves.

I'm an adoptee myself, and I lead both groups. T.H.R.I.V.E. is for adults who were adopted and want to look at how adoption has shaped them, with other people who know that experience from the inside.

The name T.H.R.I.V.E. stands for Trust, Heal, Restore, Integrate, Validate and Emerge.

Each meeting is guided, and the group follows a structure over time, so you get more than an open conversation. Together we cover search and reunion, identity, relationships with adoptive family, and anything that feels hard to talk about elsewhere.

T.H.R.I.V.E. is a psycho-educational support group, not therapy. If you'd like individual sessions instead of or alongside the group, let me know. I am happy to talk about what would best meet your needs.

Everyone in the group agrees to clear ground rules about privacy, respect and safety. We'll go over them together on your first call.

Janice creates a group space that feels caring and safe. Opening up about my adoption with others was a big and intimidating step for me… Her patience, empathy, and wisdom made it feel possible one session at a time.

What we talk about

Over the course of the sessions, the group works through experiences many adoptees share, and how adoption can shape and intersect with each one:

  • Loss
  • Rejection
  • Guilt and shame
  • Grief
  • Identity
  • Intimacy
  • Mastery and control

Each theme is approached with care, with room for reflection and discussion.

A community that I have never had before.
